A Muhlenberg Township man accidentally discharged a handgun last weekend and the bullet went through the door at the entrance of his neighbor’s apartment, police said Thursday.

Police responded to a call at 11:25 a.m. Saturday to the victim’s residence in the 3100 block of Kutztown Road after he called police, saying a bullet had just come through his front door and lodged in a wall, Chief William Heim said.

While officers were talking to the victim, a man approached from a neighboring home, saying his weapon went off while he was preparing it for target shooting at a firing range.

He turned over the handgun to police. Patrol officers turned over the investigation to a detective.

No one was injured in the incident.

After investigating further, the detective determined the gun fired accidentally while the owner was cleaning the weapon because he didn’t properly clear the weapon of any live rounds, Heim said.

Heim said the detective determined no charges are warranted and closed the investigation.
