Really, do you need probiotics for your anus?

The topic of anal probiotics has been circulating online, so we wanted to find out if they are really necessary.

2021 is the year that makes things "cheugy"-skinny jeans, sideways and apparently blond hair are out of fashion now. However, anal sex has played the opposite role and is experiencing some kind of renaissance in popular culture.

This kind of sex involves a lot of preparation, and the online world has recently agreed with the idea that the "anal microbiome"—yes, it also has—must be protected in the process. Therefore, anal probiotics are needed.

So-if you intend to participate in this kind of sexual activity, is this supplement really necessary, or is it completely nonsense?

We asked Dr. Jessica Wade, an indigenous doctor with a passion for sexual empowerment, to clarify for us.

"The'anal microbiota' is a group of natural bacteria that coexist harmoniously in the anus," she told Body+Soul.

"You may have heard of the gut microbiome. The anal microbiome is similar. We all have a unique microbiome that helps maintain balance and maintain healthy tissue and function in the area."

Dr. Wade explained that many activities involved in anal sex affect the delicate balance of bacteria.

"Anal sex, including licking (with the tongue), inserting fingers, penis, sex toys, can destroy the natural microbiota on the anus," she said.

"Some studies have shown that common'flushing' or'emptying' preparations, and some lubricants (especially flavored and toxic) can disrupt the balance and healthy balance of the microbiota."

However, she added that there are conflicting studies in this area, and further research is needed to "determine the extent of anal activity and its impact on the anal microbiota."

"This may lead to poor tissue and epithelial health, putting you at greater risk of local damage, fissures, abscesses, and certain infections."

All the discussions about anal sex and the anal microbiome make us wonder-why should we focus on this when the vagina also has a microbiome that may be affected by sexual activity?

Although both have microbiomes that may be affected, the types of microbiomes are not the same.

"The vaginal and anal microbiota are very different, they both have different bacterial strains and immune cells," Dr. Wade explained. "Your sexual health directly affects your overall health. It is important to understand the microbiota to promote a healthy and enjoyable sex life."

"I don't think there is enough research to support their use," Dr. Wade explained. If you have anal sex with a consenting adult, there is no reason to avoid anal sex.

"Anal sex is a magical sexual experience of total surrender and pleasure...Opening your heart to accept that anal sex in a way of total trust and surrender is a truly intimate act, and anal orgasm is exciting," she added.

What is her secret to healthy anal games?
