Firefighters rushed to an apartment complex in The Netherlands following complaints of a burning smell — which was caused by an overheating vibrator.

A female resident of the apartment block, located in the city of Turnhout, made the emergency call earlier this month, fearing that the building was on fire, The Daily Star reported.

First responders were initially unable find the source of the smell inside her home and brought in a thermal imaging camera for help.

They subsequently determined that the burning odor was coming from the sex toy, which was concealed in a wooden box and was hot to the touch.

Officer Nick Eelen told local media that the woman was mortified by the discovery and pretended to be clueless as to what the battery-operated device was.

“Wow… what’s that?” the red-faced resident reportedly responded when firefighters opened the box and found the overheating item inside.

“I have a lot of experience in interventions, but I had not experienced this before,” Elen told local media.

“What exactly happened, we can only guess, but at a certain point there was a short circuit in the vibrator’s battery,” he continued. “In theory, the silicone simply melts and it is over, but if such a device is in a combustible place – such as in this case a wooden box – there could be a fire hazard.”

He told reporters that the incident was a reminder for people to keep a close eye on their battery-powered devices and to make sure that they are stored in fire-proof places.

And while Eelen says he has never responded to another incident involving an overheating sex toy, it’s not the first time that a vibrator has sparked a fire emergency.

Back in 2019, Austrian fire crews responded to reports of of a burning tire on a freeway.

After extinguishing the blaze, firefighters found it was actually a vibrator which was on fire. It’s believed a kinky commuter had thrown the flaming item out of a car window before fleeing the scene.

Meanwhile, last year, a woman took to Reddit claiming her entire house almost burnt down after she fell asleep while her vibrator was charging.

“It’s completely melted and my whole apartment smells like burnt plastic,” she wrote. “I honestly think it was minutes away from setting my whole apartment on fire, which is both embarrassing and terrifying.”
