In the Pocket: Mariano a bowler with a multitude of talents – The Daily Gazette

Multi-talented Brian Mariano excels on both the lanes and the links. He can also give you a professional play-by-play call or color commentary of his or his buddies’ exploits on demand.

Mariano, 32, made his living for the last seven or eight years describing other standout athletes on the radio, but he’s also a consistent and confident competitor who can execute in the clutch.

Last weekend, the Mechanicville High School and Hudson Valley Community College product defeated Scott Rogers in the finals to claim the King of Hill Tournament at Hilltop Bowl in Speigletown. The format called for five games of qualifying, and then head-to-head match play for the top 16 qualifiers. Mariano knocked off several talented players on the way to the title. He used his new 900 Global Wolverine ball.

It wasn’t the first local win for Mariano, who’s found success on the lanes ever since he was a youngster.

He won the Troy Bowling Association’s 800 Tournament while he was competing on the HVCC bowling team, and he also beat Connor LeClair, the talented son of Revolutions Pro Shop proprietor and former PBA50 Player of the Year Brian LeClair, in the finals of a Huck Finn non-winners tournament on television.

He and Tim Geleta captured the TBA Doubles Tournament crown in 2018, and he was part of the winning team in the TBA 2019 City Championship.

“Anyone who watches me knows that I don’t like to hook it a lot,” Mariano said. “At Hilltop, they put down the Route 66 oil pattern, and that pattern hooks more than I would like. I was prepared to play more to the left, but I prefer to play around the first arrow or between the first and second arrow. I pride myself, especially when I was at HVCC, for learning to be versatile. People see me more as a tweener [midway between a stroker and a cranker] with my style, but I can play inside when I have to.”

At HVCC, Mariano frequently bowled 60-70 games per week between practices, his leagues and college tournaments.

“I just really enjoyed bowling,” he said. “We made the top 15 in the country and won all the local tournaments we could win. We lost by just one pin in the conference tournament one year, and I ended up being the conference MVP, along with Victoria Jensen. We had a bad block at nationals, but it was still one of the best years I ever had.”

Mariano bowled on the Mechanicville High School bowling varsity team for five years. The team won the Class C-D crown in 2004, 2006 and 2008, the year he shot a 1,415 six-game block and earned a spot on the state team.

Mariano continued his success on the lanes after high school and college. Although he currently bowls in just one league — the Beer Belly Bob’s Classic at Hometown Lanes — he used to bowl three or four times a week. One year he averaged better than 230 at three different houses.

“Hometown is my home center, but I prided myself on being able to bowl at different centers and to be more versatile,” he said.

Mariano’s highest league average is a 235. He currently has 32 perfect games and 14 800 triples, but none this year. “I’ve tried to stay ahead of my perfect game totals compared to my age,” he said with a laugh.”

The former UAlbany play-by-play and color commentator also worked for ESPN radio for seven years both as a producer and on-air personality. He currently works for SEFCU.

“My dream when I went to HVCC [studying broadcast journalism] was to get into the communications business, especially at ESPN,” Mariano said. “I was lucky enough to have a friend who offered me a job working the board as a producer for Yankee games at night. That gave me a foot in the door, and I still worked at ESPN after I graduated. As far as the UAlbany job was concerned, the pandemic put a hurt on the UAlbany stuff, and they didn’t have the budget any more to pay me.”

Besides his skills on the lanes and as a radio producer/on-air personality, Mariano is also an outstanding golfer who has won the Mechanicville Golf Club championship the last three seasons. He’s basically a scratch player (0.5 handicap) who has shot 67 twice — once at Mechanicville GC, and another time at Orchard Creek. After giving up football in middle school, he played for the Mechanicville golf team since he was in eighth grade. He was the Class C-D tournament medalist one season and made it to the state qualifier several times. He’s also a frequent competitor in top area golf tournaments.

But it’s too early to take his clubs out now, and you can find him competing in numerous local team bowling events over the next two months.
